What’s Happening at the South Haven Center for the Arts?

Mistletoe Market is approaching fast and the South Haven Center for the Arts is still seeking artists who want to show their original work.
October is also the moth that the Center holds workshops to make things to sell at Mistletoe Market which opens November 20. These workshops are October 7 and 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon or later. The proceeds from the items will go to support the art center’s programs. This year there is a works shop called “Purses fro Neckties.” Bring colorful neckties to be cut and sewed into purees for carrying cell phones, money or other objects. Please bring silky neckties, pins and scissors.
Those who like to arrange flowers can make decorations using foam cones and eucalyptus and other objects. Facilitator Janet Beatty says to bring sparkly jewelry and trim if you have some.
Everyone can join in making bows for decoration and for sale. Participants will be taught how to make attractive bows from holiday ribbon. This year the art center will be giving away tags with each purchase. These tags will also be made at there workshops. Come and have fun crating items and decorations for Mistletoe Market. Members and non-members are welcome. Just show up either day.
Workshops for enjoyment and enrichment
The workshop, “Nature at Your Doorstep,” which is based on the nature photographs of Dean Pemala, will be held Saturday, October 30 at 1 p.m. Through discussion and exercises, participants in this interactive workshop will discover the wisdom, inspiration and renewal that nature offers. Pamela is a nature photographer who teaches at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts.
Lynda Navarre is offering Funky to Fabulous Furniture Painting Friday October 22 from 10 a.m. to 4p.m. Lynda, South Haven’s “decorating diva,” promises a workshop that will be fun and productive. Bring a garage sale chair, bench or table, and she will teach students how to paint it, taking it from funky to fabulous. The cost is $42 for non-members and $38 to members.
There are still openings in Sarah Schneider’s Middle Eastern Dance class Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Schneider says in the class, she will focus on basic techniques, history and the culture of Middle Eastern dance. Students should wear comfortable clothing and bring a scarf to wear around their hips.
Kristin Hay is still taking students for Morning Yoga Wednesdays from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Students will learn movements based on Kundalini Yoga to help energize them all day long. In this class, she combines traditional Hatha Yoga stretches, postures and breathing techniques with Kundalini Yoga exercises. These exercises invigorate the body quickly while helping to build flexibility and strength. Drop in for $8 a session.
Currently in the lower gallery
The current show at the South Haven Center for the Arts features the artwork -- sculpture, paintings, drawings and photography from members of incredibly creative family.

“Anderson Art: Three Generations of Creation” opened last week. The exhibition includes sculpture by South Haven resident Marian Anderson, paintings and drawings by Wendy Anderson Halperin, paintings and drawings by Kale Halperin and photography by Ted Mathias. It continues through November 7.
Pick up a complete class schedule at the Center during office hours Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. The Center is closed Tuesdays.
Notes on re/construct
New work in the Terra Incognita series by Jennifer Steensma Hoag

Grand Rapids photographer Jennifer Steensma Hoag says she left her photographs untitled because the objects are supposed to be ambiguous. “These are found installations that I made into art.”

The photos document human alterations to the landscape. She says she is interested in the intersection of human constructions with a natural landscape. Although they are not intrinsically beautiful, she considers the subjects to be beautiful through the composition, design and craft.

She took the photographs with a twin lens Rolleiflex camera made in the 1940s. She then altered the photos slightly with a digital program, digitally exposed them and then printed them on photographic paper.

Otto Selles, a poet who is a Professor of French at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, wrote poetry to accompany the photographs in this exhibition. The title, “re/construct, applies to the photographs themselves and to the pairing of the poems with the pictures.

“The viewer has to re/construct the photo as he looks at it and re/construct it when he reads the poem that goes with it,” says Steensma Hoag.

The exhibition, ”re/construct” focuses on objects that were constructed for military or industrial purposes within the barren landscape of the desert salt flats.

Hoag is an Assistant Professor at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. In 1998, she was awarded an artist residency from the Center for Land Use Interpretation. This body of work was inspired by the objects she found and the landscape that was around her during her residency.

(continued...)

Center Director Michael Fiedorowicz says the photographs in this series are obscure. “Re/construct” has austere objects in the landscape that don’t quite reveal their meaning.”

In her artist’s statement, Hoag explains why she photographs these sites.

“Landscape is a human construct, created as much within us as around us. I photograph land sites which are under construction or have been altered by other human activity. In these images, I omit contextual information, leading viewer s to believe they are viewing documents of land art or installations. While blending and contrasting commercial and military use of land with an artistic use, these works display the ambiguous relations between the documentary and aesthetic value of the image, the ability of the photographic image to inform and deceive, and the use of the photograph as substitute or visual reminder.”
