Weblog Posting Tutorial - Extended Entry

Creating an extended Entry is really easy. The hard part is
knowing when and why to create one.

Now look at Watchdog, it is a collection of entries by a number
of people. Within each weblog sometimes we have quite a few
different authors posting. If you think like the people coming to the site and browsing,
you will understand extended entry better. People do not like to scroll, and they must
scroll a lot if there is a really long post. Some entries require a lot of space and they
should take as much as they need. I am all for it.
Watch for these boxes containing basic tips to help you through along the way. *Read the one below, it is not a basic tip. That one is just darn tricky!

But for the sake of the browsers we should make an extended entry when our post will be more
than a screen long, maybe less. This way the browsers will know there are more entries
to be found on the page, not just move on after they tire of reading part of one long post.

Okay, this is really simple. Create an entry like you normally would and then when it starts to get a
bit long and there is a good place to break, I look for suspenseful or a compelling place to stop, and
I often place some... after the last word. Then start to type in the text box below marked "extended
entry". I usually start my entry with (...continued) because after these entries move off the main page
or when a person clicks on the continue reading link, they are one whole post again.

*TIP

If you delete an entry you will no longer see it listed in the MT Publishing Platform, but it remains on the website. Why? Because in order to completely delete an entry you must click on Rebuild Site >>>
and wait for a small window to open and then click on rebuild again. Now, I do not want you to think there is any good reason to delete an entry. There is not. This is a weblog, a log. It is meant to be kept forever, like a journal or a diary or any other historical piece of evidence that we have been here on this earth. But if the program whacks out on you and you find you accidentally made 2 identical entries instead of 1, (which happens sometimes) then go ahead and delete one. That is the only reason to delete anything on this weblog.

The program will automatically create a link in your entry to the extended entry with the title of your
post, like this: Continue reading "Extended Entry"
