Winter Bazaar a sunny success
Our Master Planner of Bazaars, June Streit, worked feverishly to make the event a success, and it was. On Saturday, November 13, the Warren Senior Center, bathed in sunlight, bustled with people eager to check out the variety of wares displayed by over 20 crafters. To add to the shopping fun, shoppers had their choice to place raffle tickets on nearly 30 individually wrapped baskets - all filled with various items from Christmas to golf. June said homemade cakes were also part of the raffle, and they looked delicious. The cakes were made by many of our staff members. Some, who don't ordinarily bake, got brave and baked a culinary creation just for this bazaar. The concession stand was a popular spot with its homemade vegetable soup and other donated goodies. SHASS made over $900 and that money will enable us to expand our services and activities. We are grateful to June for her expertise, her hard work, diligent planning. We also thank Miriam Woods for her many creative baskets. She outdid us all!
On a holiday note, SHASS wishes you all a happy Thanksgiving. We hope you share this special day with the special people in your lives and that you take time to express gratitude. We can always find something to be grateful for - even if it's not eating too much!
In regard to this writer's first digital picture on this blog, it was an undertaking for her because she was/is very attached to her Nikon 35 millimeter camera. Thanks to the help and encouragement of webmaster Denise Hartmann and special friend Kristin Hay, she is finally wading, gradually, into the digital picture world with her new Kodak Easy Share camera. Her task now is to get proficient in downloading the pictures. Over time she will add more of these digital creations to this blog with some confidence and skill.
However, she still feels those "photographic currents" pulling her to pick up her trusty Nikon and hear that familiar click of the shutter when snapping a picture.

My first digital picture

Recently, I took a walk with the Pathfinders Association. I decided to take my new digital camera and try it out! This is one of my favorites looking from the Michigan Maritime Museum.

South Haven Area Senior Services celebrates November with a Winter Bazaar
At SHASS we decided to help people get a head start on their Christmas shopping by sponsoring a Winter Bazaar in November. Yes, Christmas is not that far away (this writer would rather enjoy Thanksgiving first then think about Christmas), but this bazaar could be the perfect place to help you find unique gifts for that hard-to-buy-for person on your list and eat some delicious food if you don't want to cook.
About 20 crafters will be diplaying their wares - from jewelry to plants - at the Warren Senior Center, 540 Williams Street, South Haven on Saturday, Nov. 13. Doors will open promptly at 9 a.m. Homemade cakes will be raffled every hour. There will also be a specialty basket raffle. You can choose from nearly 30 baskets such as a baby basket, Christmas basket, Salon basket. The basket raffle will be held at 2:30 p.m. You don't have to be present to win. The concession stand will feature homemade vegetable soup, hot dogs, desserts and drinks. So, come on down to the Warren Senior Center on Nov. 13 and enjoy shopping and eating and perhaps winning a basket or a homemade cake. Some of our staff members are great cooks. This writer is not one of them.
On a helpful note, the MS support group will be meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the Warren Senior Center. For more information, call Ann Gossman at 637-8428 or Dianna Montgomery at 639-1783.
If you want to take a fun trip before Christmas, SHASS has a neat Chicago trip planned for Dec. 14-15. Call Mary at 637-3607 for more information.
On another note, please note our offices will be closed on Nov. 11 for Veterans Day and on Nov. 25 and 26 for Thanksgiving.
These days you may not hear much about people having slide shows, but SHASS has planned one you might enjoy: "Moods of Yosemite." The free show will take place at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at the Warren Senior Center. Sharon VanderBoon, who has been in the photography field for 19 years, will be your "tour guide."
She created "Moods of Yosemite" after traveling to the Yosemite National Park in June of 1998. Sharon said it was an unusual June that year because of the El Nino activity. There was more snow in the mountains that winter and consequently the extra rain and cooler weather in the spring created many climatic moods, which Sharon captured on camera - hence the name "Moods of Yosemite."
The SHASS staff wishes you a happy Thanksgiving with family and friends.... and have fun shopping.
