help with finding info???
i'm helping a friend do some research and knowing that the folks that visit this site are "in the know" i thought i could tap your brains for some valuable information. i need the info by october 15th, so anything that will help me speed up the process would be much appreciated.
this is what i'm hunting down:
- Articles, editorial, letters about the demolition of the old Everett
building pertaining to environmental impact (esp. the onsite crushing
of the concrete)
- Articles concerning the Sherman Hills Development
- Hard numbers on job loss in South Haven. But not just an overall
number but 100 here, 50 over there, etc...
thanks a ton! you can either respond here or email me at mistresselaura@care2.com

Sarah,
Check the archives of the Kalamzoo Gazette on Sherman Hills. They've just recently (last week or so) run some pretty good coverage on that development.
I don't think you'll find much outside the Tribune/Palladium on the Everett demolition.
Outside of the Clarion shutdown I don't think there's been much loss in the immediate SH area over the past couple of years. I think its been about three/four years on Scott Aviation closing (bad memory and don't have numbers at home) The regional losses have been numerous and the state is at the bottom of the list on job retention/creation. Right now the mood in the state among economic development agencies is one of holding on to what you have. South Haven is very dependent on the success of our region (Kalamazoo, Benton Harbor/St. Joe, Holland, etc).
Since the 70's South Haven has actually faired well compared to the nation in terms of Manufacturing Job loss. About 30% drop for nation and 15% in SH area. Doesn't feel any better though. But that's what happens when the economy switches from ag, to manufacturing to service. And given the consumers demand for ever lower prices manufacturing that can be done in the lowest cost parts of the world will see the growth.
On the plus side, Pullman remains fairly stable and we may see some more small employment gains there, Riveer Corp is expanding, Elbe and Sohn is expanding and Do-It, DSM and Trelleborg all appear stable.
Hopefully you'll see the Palisades Plant get relicensed otherwise that'll be a loss of 600 + jobs.
